Sharks & rays

Blacktip reef shark vision is poor, and prey detection is much more based on movement and smell than sight.

The great hammerhead is the largest of all hammerhead shark species and has been known to reach lengths of 6.1m.

Unlike many shark species, Indo-Pacific leopard sharks do not need to swim to breathe and may remain stationary for hours while breathing through ‘buccal pumping’.

Javanese cownose rays use their powerful jaws and flat teeth to crush hard-shelled prey like clams, oysters, and crabs.

Ocellated eagle rays are known for ‘breaching’ - jumping out of the surface of the water, sometimes up to 1m high.

Sand tiger sharks have complex social behaviours and are often seen in large groups.
Not a fish

The descriptor ‘tortoiseshell’ is based on the pattern of the Hawksbill turtle’s shell.

West Indian manatees are colloquially called ‘sea cows’ in some languages because of their slow movements and plant-based diet.
Aquariums in Planet Zoo 2 also hold reptiles and mammals.
