In-game description

There was once a waterborne crew on Meigu Lake that cared nothing for a newcomer's name or past. A person was judged only by their skill on the water and the size of their catch. And if some weary, down-on-their-luck soul happened to drift this way, they could still earn a few cups of rough wine, drinking away half a lifetime of hardship to the sound of the water and the glow of lanterns.

[Memoirs of Tingshui] I: The DuelFor twenty years, with blade in hand, I never lost a martial contest. Then I met an iron-masked man who called himself a Transcended. In only three moves, I was left unable to fight back - and he had not even used his full strength... I tried to explain myself to my master, but received only one reply: "I have no disciple as useless as you." Then I was expelled from the sect.
[Memoirs of Tingshui] II: Glimpse of HopeDrunk, I fell into the water and was hauled back up in someone's net. Seven or eight noisy fishermen crowded around me. Some laughed, some complained that I had ruined a good fishing spot, and one wondered aloud whether I counted as part of the catch. A few of their remarks were more than I could tolerate, so I started a fight. I was about to draw my sword when a man in blue pinned me down. His presence brooked no argument. "Enough. Young man, come with me." He never asked where I came from. He simply invited me to drink. The next day, he took me to the river and taught me how to spear fish.
[Memoirs of Tingshui] III: Winning and LosingThe brothers of the Blackwater Crew included former bandits, retired escorts, and ordinary fishermen. They taught me to knot nets, read the water, and find the fish. At night, we drank wine and roasted our catch beneath the moon. Not long ago, the leader asked me, "Do victory and defeat still matter to you?" I looked at my hands, pale from the water, and laughed. "There are already too many brothers in the crew eager to play the hero. I should give them more chances to shine."

Fragment of a Travel Journal...Everyone in this village is a strong swimmer. Even the little children, who can scarcely run, already know how to dive and hold their breath... The sun has set. Miasma hangs everywhere, and there is no sign of my old friend. I may as well spend the night beneath this tree...
Heavily Annotated Map[A layout of a row of dilapidated huts, marked with an "X"] (A small note appears underneath:) No survivors found. [An otherwise unremarkable stretch of riverbank, with several places circled] (Note below:) I wonder where the Blackwater Crew has gone...
Stranded Paper Boat(Unfolding the paper boat reveals several crooked lines of writing, apparently made by a child still learning their characters.) There are so many fish monsters in the water. They hurt lots of people. Something howls at night, too. Sister and I are hiding in the house. We're almost out of food... Please save us...
