Overview
狮子 (学名：Panthera leo) 栖息于撒哈拉以南非洲及亚洲 (目前亚洲种群仅存于印度西部) 的莽原、草原和开阔林地中。 雄狮最显著的特征是浓密的鬃毛，颜色从金色到黑色不等，既能在打斗中起到保护作用，也能彰显优势地位；雌狮没有鬃毛，身形更修长流畅，捕猎时更加灵活。狮子通体呈黄褐色至沙黄色，腹部颜色较浅。 成年雄狮一般头体长 1.7 至 2.5 米，尾长 90 至 105 厘米，体重 150 至 250 千克。雌狮体型较小，头体长平均 1.4 至 1.8 米，尾长 70 至 100 厘米，体重 110 至 180 千克。

狮子是群居动物。野外的狮群通常由数只有亲缘关系的雌狮及其幼崽、一头优势雄性，外加一到两头从属雄狮组成。狮群内部相处和睦，极少发生争斗，除非有雄狮向首领雄狮发起挑战。尚未拥有自己狮群的年轻雄狮常常组成小团体一起活动和捕猎。 狮子全年均可繁殖。狮群中的优势雄性会与所有成熟且发情的雌狮交配，个别发情雌狮也可能与多头雄狮交配。 雌狮妊娠期为 3.5 个月，每胎通常产下 2 至 3 只幼狮，会在远离狮群的巢穴中产仔。一般在幼狮 6 至 8 周大时，母狮才会将它们带回狮群。幼崽在 7 至 8 个月大时断奶。 狮子在 3 至 4 岁时达到性成熟。大多数雌狮会留在母亲的狮群中，而所有雄狮都会被迫离开，必须设法建立属于自己的狮群。年轻雄狮可能组成小型单身群体，这类联盟有时会联手接管一个狮群。年老或虚弱的首领雄狮被竞争对手驱逐后，胜出者会杀死非亲生的幼狮，因为雌狮在育幼期间不会交配。
