河马 (学名：Hippopotamus amphibius) 是一种大型哺乳类动物，原生于撒哈拉以南非洲地区的河川。 它们是体型庞大的半水生动物，拥有长而突出的牙齿，鼻孔位于口鼻部顶端，还有着小小的耳朵和呈灰棕色的厚实皮肤。 雄性河马体长 4 至 5 米，体重介于 1500 至 2000 公斤之间；雌性河马则体长 3.3 至 4.2 米，体重 1000 至 1500 公斤。

河马会与同类互动，但不会组成紧密的群体或搭档关系。成年雄河马是半独居且有领地意识的动物，它们会占领一段河道，并允许雌河马群 (和无意挑战的雄河马) 在此定居。雌河马会根据栖地质量选择定居地点，因此在较好的河段中，雌河马群的规模会比较大。河马在水中时对彼此相当友善，但在陆地上有时则较具攻击性，特别是在进食的时候。 河马全年均可繁殖，但高峰出现在雨季。领地条件较好的雄河马更有可能成功找到配偶，这是因为雌河马更可能选择定居在它们的河段。雄河马会通过气味找出发情的雌河马，然后再跟随对方并出声呼唤，直到对方同意交配为止。交配在水下进行，雌河马通常只有鼻孔露出水面。 交配后 8 个月，雌河马会在水下产下一头小河马，小河马会游到水面上呼吸第一口空气。小河马会待在母亲身边，直到 5 至 7 岁时性成熟，然后便会离开，前去寻找新的居住地，不与近亲一起生活。
