Levelling
Every skill in Valen uses the same XP curve. This guide shows how much XP each level needs, how each skill earns XP, and how much combat XP each creature gives.
How XP works
1. Every skill uses the same XP curve, up to the highest level in the table below. The XP you need keeps growing as you go: each step of 5 levels takes about twice as much XP as the one before. 2. Gathering and crafting skills give a set amount of XP for each fish, ore, bar or potion. The Fishing, Mining, Smithing and Potion Making guides show the XP for each one. 3. Combat skills get XP from the damage you deal, so every hit counts. Higher level enemies give more XP, and the XP bonus column shows how much for each creature. Above level 100 the bonus keeps growing, but more slowly. 4. Part of all combat XP goes to Health, and the rest goes to the combat skill you are training, which depends on your weapon and your stance. The creature table shows both parts.
XP for each level
Total XP is what you need from level 1. Each skill's own page has the full list for every level.

Tips
Combat XP comes from damage, not kills, so pick enemies you can hit often and safely. A higher level only adds a small bonus, so an enemy you can fight quickly is often better than a much stronger one.
To train Defence, Evasion or Warding, use the Defensive stance (default key V) with a shield or a two-handed weapon of that style.
In the game files, gear checks your base level, but rocks and fishing spots check your current level. So a Mining or Fishing potion should let you gather a little above your level, but not wear better gear early. This hasn't been checked in game yet.
Not confirmed yet
Some creatures and bosses have their own XP multiplier in the game files. It's not certain whether it stacks on top of the level bonus, so the table above leaves it out. When you train two combat skills at once, the game files don't make clear whether the combat skill's share is split between them. The game can also run a game-wide XP bonus, which isn't included here. If you test any of this, let us know and we'll add it here.
