Smithing
Smithing turns ore into bars, bars into plates and rods, and those parts into weapons, armour and tools. You need a high enough Smithing level for each recipe, and a hammer to use the anvil.
How smithing works
1. Smelt ore or dust into bars at a furnace. This is called Smelting. 2. Forge bars into plates and rods at an anvil with a hammer. This is called Forging. 3. Put parts together into finished weapons, armour and other gear at the Assembly Table (the in-game guide calls it the workbench). This is called Assembling. 4. Every craft gives Smithing XP. A higher Smithing level unlocks more recipes and makes you craft faster.
Each recipe has a base time. Your Smithing level and smithing power make it faster: time = base time ÷ (1 + (level + power) ÷ 100). For example, at Smithing 50 with 10 smithing power, a 60 second recipe takes 60 ÷ 1.6 = 37.5 seconds.
Smelting: bars
Bars are the start of every smithing recipe. The Mining guide shows where each ore comes from, and the Dwarven Furnace guide explains how its heat works.

Armour sets with schematics
These recipes also need a set of schematics in your inventory. The schematics are not used up, so one copy covers every piece. The Dusk Knight pieces are forged at the anvil first, then put together at the Assembly Table.

Tips
Most dust from volcanic rocks can replace its ore when smelting. The "Or use" column shows which.
Some gear needs parts from other skills too, such as leather, cloth lines and spider parts. Check the Ingredients column before you start.
Elven Gold Schematics are found in the Elven Chest. The Dusk Knight Schematics are given by the Valen City blacksmith in conversation.
Not confirmed yet
The game uses both anvil power (from hammers) and smithing power (from gloves and gems). It isn't known which one counts at each station, so the speed formula above uses "smithing power" for both. The time you actually wait can also be a bit longer because of short delays between crafts. What you need to do before the Valen City blacksmith gives you the Dusk Knight Schematics isn't known yet.
