Taking the quest
NavikaAh, a pioneer. So you've met some of our members before.
- YouI've spoken with Ilbaina before.
NavikaI'm Navika from the Crimson Watch. The lake case is still underway. It may take some time.
- YouIf you need help, I can lend a hand.
NavikaAre you certain? ... Very well. That would be far more efficient than waiting for reinforcements. I accept your offer.
- YouI'll need some information first.
NavikaI'll tell you what I know.
- Another version
NavikaWe're still investigating. Can't share details yet, but I'll let you know when we find something. You can fish or head home. It's fine. Just stop troubling the villagers. They're in no state to help.
- YouAn investigator, I take it?
NavikaHow many times must I tell—Ah, you're a pioneer. I'm Navika of the Crimson Watch. We exist to protect settlers and those in need.
- YouWhat happened at the lake?
NavikaYes, though as I have been telling everyone, the investigation is ongoing. There is nothing to report just yet. Circumstances prevent me from investigating directly, so it will take time. I ask for your patience.
- YouI'll help.
NavikaAre you certain? ... Very well. That would be far more efficient than waiting for reinforcements. I accept your offer.
- YouI'll need some information first.
During the quest
- WhiscowAre you here to investigate, too? Just leave it. Best to let this place die out.
- YouWhat do you mean by that?
- WhiscowThey brought it on themselves. Should've seen it coming, what with everyone going after fish like it'd last forever. They started acting like they owned the lake... Now look at it.
- YouAnd? / What happened?
- Whiscow(sigh) I'm just tired of hearing them whine about their own mess. Do what you came to do, then leave. Even if the fish in the lake come back, there's nothing good here anymore.
- ThelisaUgh, don't just stand there. Try talking some sense into him!
- YouSorry?
- ThelisaIf we can't catch any fish, we can't make a living! I don't get why he's being so stubborn. I noticed you speaking with that woman earlier. Did she mention any way to solve this?
- YouWe're still investigating.
- Thelisa(sigh) Well, I've told her all I know. No point repeating myself.
- DuomoOh, thought you were just a traveler. But I saw you talking with that woman. Are you here for the investigation too?
- YouYes, that's right. / I'm helping her.
- DuomoFigures. Ask whatever you need. I'll tell you what I know.
- YouCan you tell me what happened at the lake?
- DuomoRight, that day... I got up before sunrise, set up my gear, same as always. But hours went by, and not a single fish took the bait. When the sun came up, we realized something was wrong with the lake.
- YouDid you notice anything strange before that?
- DuomoHmm... I just felt more tired than usual. But that often happens before the rain, so I didn't think much of it.
- DamaiWhat is it? Got something to say?
- YouYou manage all these lines on your own?
- DamaiOf course I do. Used to be my pride and joy, though now they're just for show.
- YouDo you know what happened at the lake?
- DamaiCan't say I do. Everything was fine through the night, but by dawn, not a single fish was biting.
- YouWhen did you realize the lake had changed?
- DamaiI heard Duomo shouting that morning. I'd wager everyone out on the lake heard him. Hmm... I don't tire easily, but I was dragging that night. I just couldn't stop yawning. Even Mardurth, who never sleeps early, was dozing off. When I woke him, he nearly jumped out of his skin. Didn't say a word after that, so I let him be. Perhaps he had a nightmare.
- MadurthI heard you talking with the old man. I suppose he mentioned my nightmare?
- YouI'd like to hear your side of it.
- Madurth... That night, I felt so heavy and tired. Couldn't even keep my eyes open. My mind was awake, but my body wouldn't move. And then... I heard something strange.
- YouStrange? What kind of sound was it?
- MadurthIt was like...something chewing. Wet and loud. I got chills all over, and this fear just...hit me. I couldn't move a muscle. Then the old man shook me awake right as I screamed.
- YouDid you hear the sound again after that?
- MadurthNo, nothing. Back then, I thought it was a dream... But the more I think about it, the more I'm sure it wasn't a dream.
- EamuthSorry, can't share this one. This fish might be my last decent meal.
- YouI just wanted to ask about the lake.
- EamuthWell... I haven't been here long, so I don't know much. After my first couple of catches, the fish just...vanished the next day.
- YouDid anything unusual happen that day?
- EamuthNot really. Oh, I slept like a rock that night. Guess I was too tired from fishing all day. Honestly, I'm more worried about the Dark Blades around here. You ever seen them? Nasty bunch. Folks should worry more about losing their heads than their fish.
- YouIsn't that what the guards are for?
- EamuthSure, but what good are they if the back path's wide open? ... Don't tell me no one else knows about that trail behind the ridge. I don't get why everyone's still sticking around this cursed lake just to fish. Anyway, I'm getting out of here for good once I finish eating this catch.
- AnderaAh! You startled me. Who are you?
- YouI couldn't help notice you mumbling.
- AnderaPlease, hear me out. I know why the lake ended up this way, but no one believes me!
- YouWhy's that?
- AnderaI've been having the same dream for days now. Dead people are floating beneath the lake, crying out in hunger. I hear this awful chewing sound...and after that, the dead suddenly disappear. Everything goes quiet.
- You... So? / Isn't that just a nightmare?
- AnderaUgh, I'm telling you, it isn't a dream! There are countless corpses beneath the lake. They've woken up...and they're devouring everything! That's why the fish are gone. Why will no one listen to me?
Finishing the quest
NavikaAre you alright? You threw yourself into the water so suddenly. I didn't expect that.
- YouI think I've found what's causing the pollution.
Navika...Wait, the cause was beneath the bridge? Or deeper underwater? Please, tell me: what you find down there?
- You(Explain everything.)
Navika... The dead returned to life... and devoured the fish? Hmm. That makes little sense. It is a phenomenon I have neither seen nor heard of. Still, this is a major breakthrough. Say... have you ever considered joining the Crimson Watch?
- YouAre you serious?
NavikaI jest. It was simply my way of saying I am impressed by your capabilities. You have my sincere gratitude. I will conduct a further investigation based on your findings. I will also notify the Crimson Watch to offer you support whenever you need it. Safe travels.
